I first used PowerBar products in competition and training way back in the late 90s, but I gained a new appreciation for the diversity of product during my training for the Twin Cities marathon and the preparation and swim of the English Channel in 2004. I stick to a few staples and often bring in samples or a jug of mixed Recovery formula to practice. These are my favorites:
- This is THE bar. I can eat these every day. The right texture and flavor to fool you into thinking you’re not eating an energy bar.
- tasty, tiny little snacks that get passed around often.
- My non-caffeinated gel for when I need some fuel but don’t want too much caffeine
- Just sweet enough to be the right gummi for a workout.
- Truly my favorite fuel. The protein in the mix stops you from getting that hungry stomach feeling in a long workout (yes- I use it for workouts), and when the water is cold, this is the best flavor when warmed up.
- This is my caffeinated gel. In longer (and especially colder) swims, I like something with a bit of caffeinated zing to it that doesn’t upset my stomach. These are double-caffeinated, so I’ll have one about every 60-90 minutes for a long burst of energy when things get rough.
