I wasn't out of the water- just not swimming :) I'm still in the water teaching throughout the week, and in workshops every weekend. With my #2 coach and admin specialist moving back to Colorado, I've been focusing my efforts on some admin and refocusing of the youth program I also coach. We're thrilled with the results, but it's time for some "me time." I head to the USVI in a week for an open water camp and I'm swimming every day now and loving the results.

Nice post. I wanted to swim 10,0000 yards on New Year's Eve, but I didn't have nearly enough time. I also wasn't sure if I could physically do it--I swam the 5K Postal Swim in August, and nothing over 4,100 yards since then.

I ended up swimming 5,600 straight (plus a nice easy 2250 earlier in the day). It was a breeze. There was a guy was in the lane next to me for the last hour and 15 minutes. Even though I didn't know him (never even spoke to him), I got a boost from swimming next to someone. Friends or family in the pool would have been even better.

I'm sure the 10,000 would have been no problem. The distance seems like more of a mental challenge than a physical challenge, like you said.

Why were you out of the water so long?

Hi Dave,
We enjoyed your TI class in San Francisco in July. My wife and I had never before competed in a swimming event and participated in the Alcatraz swim in September. The TI course gave us the tools to become good swimmers and enjoy open water swimming.
Our times for Alcatraz:
30:48 me
34:45 wife
So we continue to practice and improve, no more crazy laps in a pool!!

Thanks,

Ty Eidam
Sacramento, California

I am interested in Total immersion training, I am a beginner and would really like to work on these skills over the fall and winter months. Are you available and what is your price. It would have to be early evenings and weekends?
Thank you.

Great insight Dave! This explains why my stroke falters when I set the TT below 1.25, it becomes unsustainable after 300m and I start arching my back/shoulders, wobbling my head and ultimately hurting myself. I need to go back to the basics and emphasize on form rather than speed...

Dave,

Nice article about not over emphasizing power.
I agree and am more interested in the timing and correct form of the catch/pull than power. It seems to me that the catch/pull aspect of swimming, propulsion, is just as important as the balance and streamline aspects. The reality is that all three basic aspects are just a convenient way of describing how to swim. Swimming is the harmony of all the aspects. I don't see why propulsion exercises are appear to minimized in TI. You need all three or you just don't go.

I look forward to your next article.
I hope it is about proper form and timing of the catch/pull.

Thanks,
Clay
