My training for the 2004 swim started with some slightly longer efforts in the summer of 2003. I told my group of swimmers about my intentions and received an awesome amount of support for training and the swim itself.
My first attempt at a qualifier came in June of 2004, but the support boat (piloted by my wife’s grandfather) broke down a couple hours in. I tried again a few weeks later in Lake Superior, and logged over 6 hours just North of Knife River, MN
My swim window opened on August 22, but nasty weather from the remnants of Hurricane Charlie moving up the Gulf Stream postponed all efforts until August 28. I completed the swim in 13 hours 9 minutes.
